Introduction

This July (15 – 25) and August (5 – 15), Kosovo International Summer Academy (KSA) will organize Part I and Part II of its 11th edition in Prishtina, Kosovo, with a special focus on Peace building in post-conflict areas – Diplomacy, Leadership and Negotiations, that will be realized by Kosovo Center for Diplomacy.
The uniqueness of the Kosovo International Summer Academy is the association with professors and guest lecturers from the world’s top universities, government officials, and ambassadors. KSA will be welcoming experts from different levels who will be teaching and sharing their academic and professional experiences with our participants, as well as will give the chance to our participants to take the information from the first hand. Kosovo International Summer Academy elaborates on different topics on economics, politics, diplomacy, professional etiquette and protocol, leadership, peaceful conflict resolution, EU Integration process, international law, human rights, international justice, international security, and the role of civil society in building peace, in interactive lectures with diplomats, high ranking officials, representatives of civic society and prestigious local and international organizations.

The Kosovo International Summer Academy aims to develop a cadre of future global leaders with the ability to make significant changes in their community and the world, in the areas of economic, political and social development.
KSA emphasizes rigorous academic preparation and interactive learning. This experience helps participants to stimulate intellectual curiosity and build self-confidence and critical thinking, while at the same time developing analytical, practical leadership and decision-making skills. Participants learn through intensive engagement in classes, debates, and simulations involving future international leaders from different countries, cultures, ethnicities and religions.
Our program is comprehensive and educational, but also encourages group interaction and discussion, along with social events. Our structure is organized to provide education, but also to foster relationships and unique experiences.

Kosovo International Summer Academy has been a wonderful experience. Kosovo International Summer Academy ?was one of the most enriching and astonishing experience of my academic carrier. During these ten days we learned a lot about Peace-building, Leadership, Negotiation and Diplomacy in post-conflict areas, focusing on the West Balkan region and one of the youngest Nations in Europe. In our lectures we had the honor to listen to and meet academics, government officials and two former presidents who informed us about the unique history of the Balkan region, especially of Kosovo and current issues of this specific area. At the KSA I met remarkable fellow student from 22 different countries with various backgrounds. Participating in the Kosovo International Summer Academy has been one of the most enriching experiences in my academic as well as in my personal life. I took part at the KSA2019. During the ten days programme we focused on the social, historical, political, and cultural situation in Kosovo in order to grasp the long post-conflict reconstruction. The lectures were given by qualified professionals and experts from all over the world and thereby provided a balanced academic look-in at peace building and development in post-conflict areas as it relates to diplomacy, leadership and negotiations. Apart from the academic side of the program, attention was also paid to so-called ?soft skills?. We also got lessons in (diplomatic) protocol and etiquette which I found very helpful. Having the opportunity to exchange cultures and bond with likeminded peers does not only broaden your horizon but also made the KSA an inspiring program which I can recommend all of you.

KSA August 2019 has been for me a fantastic combination of valuable personal connections and professional insights in a country I have only read about it and watched the news on TV. The attention to details and commitment of the organisers is reflected in the high quality of lectures throughout the summer school and also the excursions around Kosovo. Overall, it is a quite well-rounded debate on the different stories and sides that compose the country and allowed me to form my own opinion on the current events. Even more so because of the contact with regular people in Prishtina and other smaller cities in the country. Best memory for me: getting a taxi to the city centre. Chances are you meet either a funny guy talking about his love for Bill Clinton and Americans or somebody involved in the post-conflict, reconciliation efforts in NGOs, government agencies that can tell you an awful lot of what happened in?1999.

KSA was a wonderful experience, probably one of the best of my life. I have always been interested in the history and struggles of the Balkan Region, but this program far surpassed my expectations. In addition to offering a wonderful cultural experience in Kosovo, KSA organized discussions on contemporary diplomatic issues with experts and officials at the local, regional and international level. I was able to meet the locals outside of the classroom and therefore have a unique perspective of this regions rich culture. This program is not just about lectures; it’s about traveling around the country, tasting delicious foods and meeting awesome people. I spent an unforgettable time in Kosovo during the Kosovo International Summer Academy.
It was a great pleasure to participate in the 7th edition of the prestigious Kosovo International Summer Academy 2019 , July session. Consisting of diverse group of students and young workers, I spent 10 enriching and inspiring days. My journey to Kosovo was not only a great opportunity to discover the country but also an occasion to learn more about the challenges it faces in its journey to build a safer and stable environment for its citizens and for its visitors. I was particularly amazed by the professionalism of the organising team. They were very punctual and available any time, even during the break time in activities organised by the participants. I also met very important personalities such as the former President, the former Judge of the Constitutional Court, the Minister of EU Integration and the incredible Sir Geoffrey Nice. I learnt a lot from them and I am definitely satisfied by the fact that we were given the opportunity to share what we know and find responses to our questions. Kosovo International Summer Academy 2019 was a very special and unique experience, experience I encountered and would recommend it to everyone who desire to take part anytime.

Four months have now passed since I came back from KSA and the emotions I felt during those ten days are still strong in me; for this reason, I would like to express my gratitude towards KSA staff for having organized such a great experience for all of us! For what concerns my impressions, I first have to mention that I had never taken part in a Summer School before and I had never been to Kosovo before July; so, it was all of a surprise for me and I didn’t really know what to expect. The Summer School is very well-organised: transports are perfectly scheduled; the Hotel is amazing with a great location and an amazing view of Prishtina and they took very good care of us. As for the classes, to me, they were all very interesting, specific and well-structured. I have also to admit that sometimes, due to the intense program and the many lectures, it’s been hard to follow, but the speakers were too important and too good that they still got my full attention. Regarding the free time, I really appreciated the guided tour around Prishtina and the fact that each one was gree to do what preferred in the evenings.The trips we made were also very interesting and my favourite one has been in Prizren. To sum up, if I had to evaluate this experience as a whole, I have to say that everything was perfect, and I will strongly suggest Kosovo International Summer Academy to everyone who are thinking to be part of it. I would like to spend a few last personal words about the amazing country of Kosovo; I had written my Bachelor thesis on the war in Kosovo and I was really curous to come and see how things had developed after the war had ended and the various international missions had been established. Well, I have to say that among all the new things I discovered, I was thrilled by the population’s attitude: how they are friendly among eacjh other despite differences, how open they are towards foreigners, their willingess to speak about their country and their personal experiences to strangers and ahtier strong desire to rebuild their own country. This positivity left me very impressed and for these such good feelings I had, I really look forward to coming back to Kosovo and to play an active part! In conclusion, I want to thank KSA from my heart for this amazing experience and the important contribution they give through this Academy which I am certain that I holds a very special place in the hearts and minds of its participants, just as it does in mine.

I think I’d need to invent a new dictionary to describe how inspiring and enlightening KSA has been for me. Not only does KSA give its participants the chance to engage with political representatives and international authorities, but the niche of colleagues that KSA unites is truly extraordinary. I have rarely bonded so deeply and quickly with a group of people as I did this summer. From academic speakers, I learned how to approach political tension with compassion and an open mind. From my peers, I learned how to pursue various careers in law and diplomacy, and I am leaving KSA with a clearer goal in mind. If you want to embrace a newly formed culture; find harmony; understand the mind of a young country; understand yourself; and crave human connection while making friendships across the world, then KSA is for you. I attended the Kosovo Summer Academy without having a clear idea what to expect. Yes, a summer academy, but in a county that was relatively unknown to me and that I had only seen on the news as a seven-year old girl. And I have to admit, all the cliches are true. About the hospitality and warmth of the Kosovar people. About the atmosphere and the pride they feel for their country. About friends that even though you have been with each other for over a week, you know will remain your friends forever. Words can never capture the grateful feeling I had when leaving, grateful for friendships, grateful for what I learned and experienced, grateful for the personal stories people shared with me. I wish it was three weeks ago and I could do it all over again.

To be honest I didn’t know what to expect at all when I landed in Pristina, as I applied to KSA without really knowing what I will be doing. However, after a few days, I realized how lucky I was to be with such brilliant students from all over the world who have unique stories to tell!
In my opinion, discovering Kosovo by interacting with the locals, professors, and politicians while visiting different parts of the country (which I would have probably not visited on my own!) was the best way to learn about the history, the politics, and the the culture. Many in my home country, France, would say that there is still a war in Kosovo and that no one should go there. Even though I’ve always disagreed, thanks to KSA I can now more efficiently prove that Kosovo is not a country of war but, rather, a country of hope. Thanks again to all the organizers and the participants for making those 10 days an incredible experience that, I am sure, no one will ever forget.

I will always remember everyday cause every single day in the Kosovo International Summer Academy was so special, winning golden friendships, getting exposed to cultures from all around the globe, learning massively from the program and the students, laughing travelling & relaxing but most importantly I’m part of the KSA family. My time at the Kosovo International Summer Academy, was extremely valuable, both academically and socially. Even though I had studied Kosovan politics for three years, I was left with many new impressions. The academy has a wide specter of outstanding lecturers, both local and international, who come from a variety of backgrounds. The result was a much deeper and broader understanding of the political processes, actors and institutions of the country, which are also relevant for other post-conflict cases. There was also always room for questions and discussions between students and lecturers, which I also learned a lot from. I would highly recommend KSA to anyone interested in an intense course in post-conflict issues.
In addition to the academic part, I had a great time at the planned field trips to different locations in Kosovo. Whether you want to see an old castle, visit a war memorial or hike next to beautiful waterfalls, there is a field trip for it. I also met people from all over the world, and made great new friendships. You will meet so many likeminded, awesome people. I am already looking at flight tickets to different countries to visit some of them again!

Being a part of the Kosovo International Summer Academy 2015, was one of the best experiences I have ever had. I was amazed at how well the entire program was organised and how warm and welcoming everyone we met was. The journey was not only educational, but it helped me understand Kosovo in a way that the news and textbooks cannot explain. KSA gave me the opportunity to meet academics, ministers and officials who could answer my questions with the clarity and give me advice on my doubts and career matters as well. But what I will cherish most is the interaction I had with my fellow peers and the organisers of KSA. ?Meeting so many wonderful people from so many parts of the world enriched me as an individual and gave me insight into various cultures, attitudes and opinions. I am honoured to have been accepted to be a part of this wonderful program and will encourage anyone who has an interest to apply for future KSA programs. In only 10 days, a group of almost 60 strangers from more than 30 different countries, was transformed into a family and I left Kosovo with friends for life. I have to admit that I had no expectations from the country either from the program. I always wanted to go to Balkans and to know more about the region and its history and culture, so when I saw the opportunity for this program I applied without hesitation. My first impression of the program was that it has been very well organized. The work of KSA executive team has been amazing from the application period until the last day. Second, the program was very interesting and complete. We had the chance to listen great speakers and Ambassadors, ministers, politicians, professors from USA, Europe, Kosovo, Serbia and Albania, also representatives of civil society. The opportunity to meet the President and members of the Assembly of Kosovo was a big plus in this event. All in all, the best opportunity was to know more about Kosovo, by mixing the view of different people, coming from around the world with different backgrounds. History, culture and food is the experience that we will share with other people.

Kosovo International Summer Academy is genuinely one of the most inspiring and fascinating experiences that I have had. The little-known story of Kosovo is one that I aspire to share with as many people as I can as I feel the strength of the people there and their desire to foster cooperative relationships between different ethnic groups is really something to be admired and followed. I returned from Kosovo feeling even more inspired to make a positive difference to the world and do all that I can to encourage tolerance and respect between people in my country and further afield. Coming to the first KSA Â Part II in August 2018 was a thoughtful decision that I do not regret. The possibility to obtain official ECTS credits, the full board program and touristic trips were to me options that were meant to prove the quality of the summer school. With 10 days intensive course from 9-5 and exploring nice places in Kosovo, I got served the academic holiday I was looking for. Indeed, you’ll get to meet and hear from various experienced and knowledgeable speakers (over 20!) who will boost your learning on Kosovo’s current affairs and (re)activate your critical thinking on many political science topics while grasping a sense of the local culture. Icing on the cake: I got to spend memorable times with people I would have perhaps never met if I hadn’t participated. Thank you to all organizers that took great care of us during such experience where I learnt a lot. Although, as John Dewey says, ”we do not learn from experience…we learn from reflecting on experience” and that’s when I realize I have actually learnt way much more than I think I have.

I was very honoured by the opportunity to take part in this Summer Academy in and about the home country of about half of my family. Although I had already some background about Kosovo and its history, I got much new knowledge and inspiration during these ten days. The speakers came from many different backgrounds: universities, NGOs, embassies, the government. My personal highlight definitely was the speech of former president Atifete Jahjaga.
But not only the lectures, also the field trips and the other participants made the Summer Academy something really special. It was very inspiring to learn from my friends I gained there, from their opinions, experiences and their work. Thanks to KSA, I had also the opportunity to cross the Mitrovica Bridge and to visit the parliament of Kosovo. Many thanks to the organising team of Kosovo International Summer Academy.

I highly recommend KSA for the following key reasons. The first and most impactful takeaway was the opportunity to learn from the students around me. Your classmates will originate from all corners of the world and hail from top universities (Columbia, Oxford, LSE, HEC Paris, Texas A&M, etc). The intellectual conversations I had with my peers ranged from geopolitical issues, cultural topics, to philosophical debates. But more importantly, these were genuinely good people to hang out with, grab a beer with, and travel the world with. Unsurprisingly, I extended my stay in Europe by a week to visit my new friends; I can confidently say that I now have friends all across the globe. Furthermore, the global leaders who came and spoke to us held several high profile positions. My favorite lecturer was former president Atifete Jahjaga, who discussed her background, her challenges while in office, and gave concrete advice for young leaders. Lastly, the tangible experience on culture, history, and emotions of Kosovo was visceral when exploring the country. Questions such as ”how do the Kosovo people view America today?” or “why is EU so important to the Kosovo people?” or even “how is Kosovo moving forward?” were questions I had coming into Kosovo and found my answers first hand. I was at first hesitant to make the trip to Kosovo. However, looking back I have no regrets.

Since I know Kosovo, I loved it. The KSA gave me the opportunity to spend more time to understand this wonderful land and its people. The ten days programme are a full immersion in the social political and cultural situation in Kosovo, trying to understand the long post-conflict reconstruction. KSA, in fact, is an innovative and positive initiative that involve young people from all over the world and thanks to speakers and experts from Kosovar institutions, civil society and universities, gives a lot of sparks to understand better the history of this particular piece of Balkan Region. KSA is not only about lectures, is also important the time spent outside the classroom, visiting historical places, cultural heritage and eating delicious food. For those who loves Balkans and for those who never been there, for sure Kosovo worth a visit and KSA is a really good option to do it.
